Apart from shows in the Stardust Theater, events at night are mostly those involving music, whether it be live, DJ-spun or karaoke-style. On one night during our sailing, there was a Caribbean dance party, and on another, Norwegian's well-known White Hot Party was hosted in the Spinnaker Lounge. Occasionally, there are also game shows, such as the Newlywed/Not-So-Newlywed game show and Battle of the Sexes. Quality of performers on board was uneven—the musical duo that played by the pool most days was imminently avoidable. We ordered a Greek salad that contained Kalamata olives, tomato and bell pepper in good condition, plus a wedge of feta cheese, but no red onion and almost no cucumbers (as promised on the menu). A station was set up for self-serve coffee, tea, water, apple juice, fruit cocktail and orange drink. At breakfast we loved that there was a juicer, manned to prepare fresh squeezed orange, grapefruit, melon, apple, celery and carrot (and in combinations)—small $2.50, large $3.50. Fruits were available with yogurt or cottage cheese, there was a small selection of baked goods, a dozen packaged cereals, plus hot oatmeal, cream of wheat or grits. Eggs could be ordered poached, over easy, scrambled, or in an omelet (egg white and an egg substitute were available). There was eggs benedict (traditional or with smoked salmon and spinach), biscuits and gravy, pancakes, waffles and French toast.
Depending on how you counted them there were at least 11 venues for dining, providing a different cuisine for every night of our cruise. There was also ample opportunity to rack up surcharges aboard Norwegian Jade, as most of the venues required an add-on of $15-$25 per person. Our cabin came fairly cheap, so we didn’t initially think the upcharges were too offensive. But the food at these restaurants is not special, some of it is mediocre at best, and an unsettling sameness started to creep in after a few dinners. At most restaurants there were predictable similarities, such as crème brulée on most dessert menus (vanilla at the French flavored restaurant, green tea at the Asian flavored restaurant, etc.). In the end, we felt that none of the specialty dinners transported us away from the predictable.
